The events taking place in Palestine’s Gaza Strip, where a vast number of civilians are killed, most of whom are children and women, should end immediately. We call upon the parties to go for a cease fire. It is apparent that the problem will not be solved by firing missiles to Israel or by use of excessive and ruthless force by Israel where a large number of children and women are killed. A cease fire should be agreed on and unimpeded provision throughout Gaza of food, fuel and medical supplies should be delivered. The only way out is negotiations. We believe that proposals put forward by France and Egypt should seriously be considered. We well come the United Nations Security Council’s, rather late, acceptance of the resolution of 8 January 2009 fourteen of the Council’s 15 members voting in favour with only one abstention, overwhelmingly calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza leading to a full Israeli withdrawal, the unimpeded provision throughout Gaza of food, fuel and medical treatment, and intensified international arrangements to prevent arms and ammunition smuggling and we call upon primarily the UN and the EU and all other international communities to act responsibly and take active part in the ongoing peace process. Within this context, we approve and support the common stand and behaviour of the two community leaders Mr. Mehmet A. Talat and Mr. Demetris Christofias. We, the Cyprus EU Association, had in past criticised both community leaders for blaming each other and not achieving sufficient progress at the ongoing peace negotiations. We shall continue our criticisms for their failures and put forward our proposals. While we are criticising their wrong doings, we shall pursue and support their proper acts with our appreciation.Ali Erel President - Cyprus EU Association
